Back in May I shot my friends Catherine's wedding. We have been friends ever since we were interns at the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality together and I was thrilled when she asked me to shoot her wedding. Catherine and Jonathan are perfect for each other and the ceremony and reception were beautiful. Her best friend from childhood, Britt, did her makeup and the reception was held in her mother's backyard in DC and everyone had a blast. Here are a few shots from the day:

About a month ago, Kim's (my sister-in-law) sister Leslie got married at the Hay-Adams Hotel in D.C. I wasn't the main shooter but she asked me to take a few shots when I got the chance (I was also on baby duty). It was a beautiful ceremony on the top of the hotel with an amazing view of the White House. I was in the back watching Peter but managed to take a few shots of the ceremony:

One of the benefits about having your reception at the Hay-Adams is that there are plenty of famous people who stay there, we ran into Natalie Portman and Dennis Leary during the reception.

Next up is Catherine and Jonathan's wedding I did a couple weeks ago...then Greg and Natalie's...and then a few pics of my friend Emily's son...and hopefully a couple random shots of Peter here and there.

Ryan and I have been friends since middle school...the days of playing hockey in his parents unfinished basement listening to Anthrax and Metallica. Not hockey video games...but our version of deck hockey (when it was too cold, wet or dark to play outside)...slap shots at point blank range and checking your friends into random boxes laying around the basement included. Ah the good old days. So when he asked John Boal (friend since 4th grade and now photojournalist) and me to shoot his wedding, we were happy to oblige. John and I split duties and had a great time at the wedding. Here are a few shots from the day.

I couldn't resist putting this shot up...thank goodness the Caps won in a blowout, otherwise BlackBerry's and iPhones might have been out during the ceremony to check the score.

Keeping up with blogging was tough when I didn't have a kid...it's a hell of a lot tougher now. Spending time in front of a computer editing images after a full day of work (usually sitting in front of a computer) away from Peter is not easy to do. Into The Wild

This post is way overdue. Karin and I went to Alaska in September for 9 days. We flew into Anchorage, rented a car and drove down to Seward for a few days, then drove up to Denali National Park, then back down to Anchorage for the final 2 days. We had a good time for most of it, but it certainly wasn't the best timing for the trip...we found out a few weeks before leaving that Karin was pregnant...and during the trip she got to experience morning sickness every day. That, along with the rain in Seward and Anchorage and the fact that we both got sick for the last 2 days of the trip kind of put a damper on our trip. While is wasn't the greatest trip of our lives, we definitely enjoyed seeing Alaska and will be going back at some point. Here are a few shots from the trip (the colors were amazing!):

We lucked out and were able to see the top of Mt. Denali (Mt. McKinley to the lower 48...but in Alaska it is referred to as Mt. Denali), only about 20% of people who visit it get to see the top:This will probably be the last post before it is loaded with baby pictures, so I hope you enjoyed the landscapes!

Dumbarton Oaks

I have been wanting to check out Dumbarton Oaks ever since I read my friend Matt's blog about getting kicking out while trying to do an engagement shoot(if you don't read his blog...you are missing out...not only is he an amazing photographer, he is also a very good writer). You can read about it here. Anyway, last weekend Karin and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather we had in the Washington area and take a walk through the gardens. As usual, Matt was right, the place is a photographers dream and fortunately we didn't get kicked out for taking a few pictures. Here are a couple of the shots that I took:

New Addition on the Way

I haven't posted a blog in a while (this seems to be a recurring theme with this site)...but things have been busy lately. We are preparing for a new member. He should be arriving early April. I took this picture the other day after work with my new toy the 5D Mark II. The camera is pretty amazing...this was taken at ISO 2500. Trying to take a picture with the first 5D at an ISO over 1600 was pointless, the image would be much too grainy to be used. Anyway, pretty exciting stuff.
Hopefully I will get some new images up soon.

I have finally had some time to start looking at the images from my cousin, Katrina's wedding weekend (I haven't even picked up my camera since that weekend). Derek and Katrina got married back on November 8 in Palm Harbor Florida. Here are some images from the rehearsal dinner, which was a very laid back evening at the Tarpoon Turtle (http://tarponturtle.com/) right on the water (just my style!). Not surprisingly a lot of the pictures are of the kids...

I hope to get some time in the next couple weeks to go through the actual wedding day pictures and put some up.

Still Alive

It's been over two months since I last put some pics up, but things have been pretty busy...Karin and I went to Alaska, we had my cousin's wedding in Tampa, Thanksgiving in New York, and a few other trips and happenings along the way.

A little over a month ago I had a portrait session with my old neighbors, Mike, Jill and Ryan. We went to Old Town Alexandria and got some nice shots...

Columbian Carnaval

What can you say about a wedding reception that at 10:30pm turned into a Columbian Carnaval celebration where fire water and costumes where handed out to the wedding guests? Hail Columbia! Ok...I stole that from Matt Mendelsohns post (who I assisted with this wedding), but can you blame me...Matt just had an op-ed piece published in the New York Times! Felipe and Elizabeth were married at Baltimore's Saint Ignatius Church and held the reception at Peabody Library. Here are a few shots from the day:

Terrible Twos???

My niece turned two today...and I can't believe how quickly she is growing up. Seems like yesterday that she was just learning to crawl...now she dances when she hears a good song on the radio (I use "dances" very loosely). But the good news is that it appears she is a fan of the Raconteurs. Anyway...my brother and his wife had people over on Sunday to celebrate and of course I brought my camera. Here is the homemade cake:

She really enjoyed the cake...

One of the gifts was a baby doll that actually makes sounds when you feed it...she was fascinated.

It was really funny that she took an interest in the cards almost as much as the gifts:

Back to Weddings

It's been a while since I did a wedding post, so it's about time I get back to them, since I have a few to catch up on and one coming up next weekend. About a month ago I helped Matt M. with a wedding at the Woodend Nature Sanctuary in Chevy Chase. It was raining off and on throughout the day...and the ceremony was to be held outside. Fortunately the bride and groom (Emily and Jay) were really laid back people and just went with the flow. It was a pretty tough wedding to shoot, but was probably the most enjoyable, because Emily and Jay, and all the other guests were such nice people and were just happy to be together and celebrating the marriage. Here is a shot of some deer that I noticed as we were walking to the ceremony site...I didn't notice when I took the picture but there is a fawn right under the doe (click the picture to see the larger version):
The rain held off (for the most part) just long enough for the ceremony:Not only was there rain throughout the day, but it was also rather warm in the mansion...here is a shot of Emily cooling off by the fan (Matt M. and I parked ourselves in front of this fan quite a few times too!). Gone Fishing

Last Tuesday something happened that hasn't happened in a while...Karin and I realized that neither of us had plans for the upcoming weekend (our original plans had been canceled earlier that day). This is pretty rare, so we decided to take advantage of it and take a quick trip out of town. After some research and debating on where to go, we decided on taking a trip to Bath County...where I used to go camping/fly fishing on the Jackson River. Instead of roughing it we booked a room in the Hidden Valley bed and breakfast...right by the Jackson. After a four hour drive we arrived and met Pam and Ron the owners of the bed and breakfast, they gave us a quick tour, advice on where to get dinner and when the best times would be to go fishing. Long story short (too late), we had a great weekend with no tv, no cell phone reception, lots of fishing, a trip to the pools at warm springs (which produce 1200 gallons of 98 degree water every hour) and really interesting conversations with Pam and Ron about the history of the mansion (known as the Warwick....http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/warmsprings/cultural_history/index.shtml) and his tour in Iraq.

Karin fishing the Jackson: After fishing we relaxed on the front porch with Ron, Pam and their dog Sammy and talked about Ron's tour in Iraq. They are both really good people. If you like fly fishing, and the country, I can't think of a better getaway...and if you really want to spoil yourself, the Homestead is right down the road.

Life's a beach...

Another year and another family vacation at the beach...although this time was slightly different. Over the last year there were two weddings...my sisters a little over a month ago and mine in November. So we had 4 married couples and Allison...who is obviously my favorite person to take pictures of. Here are a couple shots from the trip...surprise surprise...they are all of her.

Ok, that's not true...I don't have a castle in Brooklyn and I don't even live in NYC (and I'm not the 4th Beastie Boy)...but we did spend the last weekend celebrating Lisa and Marc's wedding in a castle in Tarrytown, not too far from Brooklyn. We were all a little nervous when it rained all day Friday, but Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day (it started raining on Sunday again...good timing). This time I wasn't the photographer...I was actually in the wedding. It's been a while since I went to a wedding without being one of the photographers, although I did bring my camera to take a few pictures (the property was just too nice not to). Lisa and Marc chose Gulnara for their photographer...she was just named one of the top 100 photographers by the Wedding Photojournalist Association so I'm really looking forward to seeing shots from the day (she said they might be up in a week or so on http://gulnarablog.com/). It was fun to talk with Gulnara and her associate Maria, and see some really good photographers at work.

Breakfast with some old friends

One of my closest friends also lives down in the Pinehurst area (very close to Duff and my sister). Matt (yes another Matt) and I have been friends since 4th grade. He and his wife Linn and their son Logan met Karin and I out for breakfast on the Sunday of my sisters wedding weekend. We got to catch up over a good breakfast and then got a tour of their house. We tried to get a some shots of the family, but Logan wasn't really in the mood to be photographed...still got a few though.

Next time we visit (hopefully soon) after doing some fishing, we'll get some better shots (I promise Mrs. Clark!!!)

Introducing Mrs. Rebecca Meyer

Ladies and gentlemen...boys and girls, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the last of the Lisacks is officially off the market. The other weekend I had the pleasure of shooting my younger sister's wedding in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Rebecca and Duff met while they were both assistant coaches at JMU, she the women's soccer assistant and he the men's golf assistant. They both decided to leave college coaching and move down to Pinehurt a few years ago.

The wedding was on Friday night, the weather was perfect (we even had a chance play Pinehurst #6 that morning...don't ask me what I shot...) and everything went off without a hitch. Here are a few shots from the day. Getting ready at the Carolina Hotel:

It was really cute, they delivered the first pieces to the bride and groom.
I have to give a special thanks to Duff's friend Tom for taking my camera off my hands and making sure that I was in a few of the shots. My Uncle Stan, brother, and Catherine all stepped up to the plate as well to take a few shots to prove that I really was there...thanks guys I really appreciated it!At the end of the night it was time to relax: I had a blast shooting the wedding and can't wait to get back down to Pinehurst to visit again.

This past Saturday I helped Matt M. with another wedding. The ceremony was at Ft Myer in Arlington and the reception was near Front Royal...so it was about a 45 mile drive...but we had good weather and I was able to stop by and meet Anne and Kevin's baby on the way to the reception (while Matt M. went around DC with the couple to get pictures) so it worked out great. Here are a couple quick pictures I took while I was there:

A Winter Wedding and Easter Sunday

It has been a while since I posted wedding shots, but I haven't been doing many weddings lately...this is the slow season. But it is about to pick up. Here are some shots of Doug Sackin and Jessica Adelman's wedding from January. They got married at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC. As usual, I covered the guys getting ready while Matt Mendelsohn took shots of the girls.

We spent Easter with my family, and Kim set up an Easter egg hunt for Allison. To be honest I didn't think she hid the eggs very well...I mean I could have found them way faster then Allison did...but then again she isn't even 2 years old...

This is a pretty random post...these pictures are from over a year ago, but I have been looking through some old pictures trying to find a few to get enlarged to hang around the house. While doing this I have been playing around with Photoshop trying to get better at converting pictures to black and white and also working on actions, multiple layers using masking etc...so here are a few that I did last night. The first two are from a trip Karin and I took to Saranac Lake in 2006:

The Honeymoon

Karin and I went to Mexico for our honeymoon. We started out in Playa del Carmen, then went to Chichen Itza and finished up in Cozumel. We stayed at the Las Palapas Hotel in Playa, right on the beach (http://www.hotellaspalapas.com/) in our own little hut:

We were close enough to the main street of Playa to be able to walk to the restaurants (which there are plenty of) for lunch and dinner. Here is a shot of a church at night that is right on the main street:

After that we headed to Chichen Itza for two nights to explore the Mayan ruins. The bus ride took 4 hours but it was worth it:

We stayed at the Mayaland Hotel, one of only 3 hotels within walking distance to the ruins. We could actually see some of the sites from the hotel lobby. One of the nights they put on a light show at the main site, it was kind of goofy, but after it was done everything went dark and you could see the temple in the bright moonlight, it was amazing:

After two full days of Chichen Itza we were ready to get back to the beach, so after another 4 hour bus trip, we raced to the ferry and headed to Cozumel. It was the perfect place to end the trip...all inclusive Wyndham. We went snorkeling, swam with the dolphins and relaxed.

Catching Up

Now that things have settled down I am getting a chance to go through some of the weddings from last year that I didn't have time to post images from. A few months ago, when the weather was still warm and there were leaves on the trees, I helped Matt Mendelsohn with Sarah Greenberger and Matthew Engel wedding at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda. Here are a few shots from the day. Matt and his dad comparing suits while getting ready:

Three Sheets

My new favorite show. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the show Three Sheets on MOJO (www.mojohd.com/mojoseries/threesheets), its great. "Embark on this international drinking tour with comedian Zane Lamprey who takes you around the world to master the local drinking customs." Basically he goes from bar to bar throughout the day (usually they shoot it in one day...sometimes two) and by the end he is usually pretty hammered...good stuff.

Christmas Break

Karin and I went up to Brockport to see her family over Christmas break. It was pretty cold up there and we actually got some snow, which was nice since we haven't had snow on Christmas in the DC area for a while. Here is a shot of downtown Brockport from Java Junction where Marc and I stopped off for some coffee and to warm up.

We flew back to Virginia on Christmas morning to spend the day with my family, and in between throwing the football, opening presents, eating and drinking a I took a few pictures of my niece Allison. I only got a few of her dressed up before she got into more comfortable clothes:

For some reason she decided to see what one of her socks tasted like...evidently she liked it, because she walked around with it in her mouth for a lot of the day.

Hello Donna!

About a month ago I shot Donna (Cohen at the time) and Dan Goldberg's wedding at Tregaron in DC. The weather was perfect and everything went off without a hitch (well except there was no wine during the ceremony so someone had to make a mad dash to the bar and get some, but that was it...pretty impressive). Interestingly enough, they used the same caterers that I am using for my wedding, so I got to see them in action and taste the food. Anyway, I don't have much time to write, but the day was a blast and I couldn't have asked for a better couple to shoot for my third solo wedding. Here are some shots from the day.

It's been a while since I have posted anything, but its been a busy couple of weeks/months. I have done a few weddings on my own and a few with Matt Mendelsohn, and been planning my own wedding. So along with all that and my full time job, I haven't had time for the blog. I will try and get a few images up soon...I have plenty to choose from, it just takes a while to get through them all.

I helped Matt M. with Lisa and Derek's wedding the other weekend. Here are a few shots from it:

I showed this picture to the kid after taking it (another nice thing about shooting digital) and he loved it...followed me around all night asking to see it again and again, pretty funny:

After 18 years of dating, two of my good friends, Dan and Lauren, got married last weekend. They had a small, family only ceremony held at Dan's brother Paul's house in Purcellville VA (they live on Lovers Lane):

40 years and new beginnings

Karin and I went up to Brockport (upstate New York) over Labor Day weekend to celebrate her parents' 40th wedding anniversary. They threw a party at the American Association of University Women house (where Mr. Toth works) to celebrate the anniversary and both Karin and Lisa's engagements. Over 60 people came to the event, which I thought was really impressive.

I helped Matt M. with a wedding reception a few weeks ago at the Museum of Women in the Arts. It was my first time being there, and it was pretty impressive:

We went on the annual family beach trip recently, it was Allison's (my niece) first beach experience. Took her a little while to get used to (wanted nothing to do with the ocean on the first day), but by the second or third day she loved it.

Funny, out of all the pics I took that week I think there might be 2 that are not of her.

Here she is doing her best Carl Spackler (Bill Murray's character from Caddyshack) impression:

Every time I look at this pic I can see her saying:
"So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice."

In honor of the Simpson's movie (one of the greatest tv shows of all time...along with Seinfeld and Cheers), I have simpsonized Karin and I:

I was bored at work and looking at some photography sites (this is what I do when I'm bored during this really really bad time of year when no sports are on...sorry baseball). It's been a while since I have posted any wedding pictures, so here are a few shots from Sarah Tierney and George Wisnieski's wedding we did a few months ago at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. It had been a while since I was last at the Naval Academy, so it was great to be back and walk around the campus a bit. I shot the guys getting ready while Matt M. shot the girls.

B'nai Mitzvah

Matt and I did a B'nai Mitzvah (as he explains on his blog is the plural form of Bat and/or Bar, since it was for cousins) in November. It was a pretty impressive party, considering it was for two twelve year olds, I can't imagine what their weddings will be like...anyway. The house was pretty nice...as you can see the kitchen is very similar to mine:

Marine Corps Marathon...and a wedding

The title sounds like a movie that should star Hugh Grant...Stamos would love it.
Karin and I went to the marathon on Sunday to cheer on a few friends and get psyched up for New York this weekend. We started on the Key Bridge right after mile 4 and saw Karin's friend, Dan who wore a toga for the race...see if you can pick him out:

We then went to mile 9 and met up with Tom and Carrie (Carrie's dad and bro were running also) but had to leave right after that so Karin could catch her flight. While waiting for the metro on the way home took this pic...

I also got my memory cards back from Matt (there is a link to his site under "Links") today so I was able to check out the pics from the fourth wedding I assisted him with...all in all, the photos were not very impressive, but I like this one:
